The Best Time to Visit Iceland

If you follow any avid travelers on Instagram, chances are that you have seen a LOT of photos of Iceland. A Nordic island nation, Iceland is defined by dramatic landscapes, black beaches, active volcanos, boiling geysers, and crystal blue hot springs, all of which make this country a true paradise for photographers and adventurers alike. Combine that with Iceland’s massive glaciers and spectacular seafood, it’s no wonder that this country has quickly become one of the hottest travel destinations of the new year. (Oh, and did I mention the amazing flight deals?!)

So the only question you really need to ask yourself is, “When do I go?!?”

November to February

November to March are some of chilliest and darkest months in Iceland. The peak of the winter season, these months see few hours of daylight and often bring lots of precipitation. But before you let the cold weather talk you out of visiting the country during these months, think again! Not only do the winter months mean MAJOR savings, but the darkness actually makes conditions ideal for seeing the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis. And don’t forget the amazing Christmas celebrations markets and celebrations in December! So pack your thermal gear and get ready for an amazing winter vacation!

February to April

Along with the warming temperatures and extended daylight hours also come the incredible Orcas. These killer whales visit Iceland from February to early April every year, and specialists lead boat tours and wildlife excursions to make the most of this magical experience. Getting up close and personal with these unbelievable animals is an experience not to be missed.

May to August

Known as the “high tourist season,” summer in Iceland may mean a few more crowds, but for a good reason! During the peak of summer, Iceland sees almost 21 hours of daylight, with the sun rising around 3 a.m. and setting just before midnight. This season may not be ideal for seeing the Northern Lights, but it is perfect for extra hours of sightseeing and adventure, as well as experiencing all of the incredible wildlife that Iceland has to offer. But it’s important to bring an eye mask so you don’t lose any sleep!

Iceland provides incredible travel excursions for tourists all year round, depending on the type of experience you are looking for! From geysers to glaciers, the nature’s miracles are on full display in Iceland. Comment below and let us know when you’ll be planning your trip to Iceland!

  1. Three of us are planning a trip to Iceland in October 2019. Notice you did not mention this month in your descriptions! At particular reason why?

    1. Hi Monica!

September and October are actually great months to visit Iceland–especially to see the Northern Lights. It’s also off-season, so it is likely much cheaper! There was no particular reason these months were not included in the article, only that they didn’t fit into any of the three main molds "winter, summer, and spring (or whale season)". But October will be absolutely beautiful, and please let us know about your trip, and all of the wonderful things Iceland has to offer in Autumn 🙂

  2. I was surprised to not see September on your list of "best times to visit Iceland." Personally, I would recommend early September to travelers because of the relatively warm weather combined with the opportunity to still see the Northern Lights. You will likely miss out on some of the ice caves because of the lingering warmth, but it’s nice to be able to take in the endless natural beauty in this incredible country while not feeling compelled to jump back in your car as soon as possible to escape the cold or worry about snow.

Overall great information in the article on this gem of a country!

    1. Hey Mike, thanks for the suggestion! It’s great to hear from someone who has visited during that month. I’ll have to update the article to add September!
